Fright-Free Finances:

Empowerment in Every Classroom

It’s the most boo-tiful time of year, and our programs have been downright fang-tastic! As we creep toward the end of October, we’re celebrating some frightfully good financial education wins and the ghouls (we mean, goals!) we’ve achieved together. Our volunteers have been absolute mon-stars this season, haunting classrooms, conjuring up engaging lessons, and helping students face their financial fears with courage and confidence.

Your dedication is no trick, it’s the real treat that keeps our mission alive and thriving! Thanks to your spellbinding efforts, we’ve helped more participants learn to budget without going batty, save without a scare, and invest in their futures instead of letting their goals rest in pieces.

1. Fresh Faces, Frightfully Big Impact

Financial Beginnings is growing thanks to your continued support! Our team is expanding to meet the rising demand for financial education nationwide! This month, we’re thrilled to welcome two new team members: Roberto is based in California, supporting our West Coast partnerships and outreach, and Noah is in Washington, strengthening connections with schools and community organizations across the state.

Together, they’ll help bring our programs to more classrooms, community centers, and families, ensuring financial empowerment reaches every corner of the map. Please join us in giving them a warm welcome to the FB family!

2. No Tricks—Just Real-World Teaching Magic

During a recent Budgeting Level 1 session, one high school student told us she learned more in our workshop than in her entire required personal finance class. Talk about a spellbinding moment!

At Financial Beginnings, we know the real magic happens when our volunteers blend expertise with authenticity. Our “80-20 rule” encourages facilitators to spend about 20% of class time sharing their lived and professional experiences, transforming lessons into stories that stick.

3. Don’t Let Your Retirement Be Haunted by Poor Planning!

Planning for the future isn’t just about saving money, it’s about building peace of mind. October is National Retirement Security Month, a time to highlight the importance of setting financial goals that last a lifetime.

At Financial Beginnings, we help learners of all ages understand the power of saving early, investing wisely, and preparing for what’s next. Through our SAFE, Forward and FB Online programs, adults gain the tools to make confident decisions about retirement planning, long-term saving, and navigating benefits and investments with clarity.

Whether you’re decades from retirement or just getting started, it’s never too late to secure your future. The best time to start planning was yesterday; the second-best time is today!

The CEO’s Corner: Real Talk on Money

Monthly perspective and practical advice from our CEO Ronecca Norvell

Auto loan defaults are climbing fast, fueled by inflated car prices, long loan terms, higher rates, and soaring upkeep costs.

At Financial Beginnings we know cars aren't luxury purchases for most families: they're lifelines to work, school, and groceries. When both the loan AND the upkeep become unaffordable, "just budget better" isn't helpful advice. This is why we focus on decision-making before the loan and understanding the total cost, knowing what payment you can truly sustain, and having a backup plan when life happens.

Jon Courtney

We’re shining a light on the incredible volunteers who help bring Financial Beginnings’ mission to life. Their time, energy, and passion make financial education possible for learners of all ages and backgrounds. This month, we’re thrilled to introduce Jon Courtney, whose commitment to community and collaboration exemplifies what volunteer leadership is all about.

What inspired you to start volunteering with Financial Beginnings?
“When I first joined Rotary five years ago, I was having trouble getting excited about any of our existing programs. That changed when the opportunity came up to reinvent our Financial Literacy program. The first thing we needed was a new curriculum, and that led me to Joanne and Financial Beginnings. The partnership has been wildly successful and is now one of my proudest achievements.”

Jon’s story reminds us how powerful partnerships can be when passion meets purpose. Through his dedication, creativity, and drive, hundreds of learners now have access to financial education that changes lives. Thank you, Jon, for helping make financial empowerment possible for everyone!
